Bratislava
The Bratislava Region lies in the westernmost part of Slovakia, bordering Hungary and Austria to the west and otherwise surrounded by the region of Trnava. The region is the smallest but most densely populated of the eight regions of Slovakia, and serves as the economical, cultural and political centre of the country. The Bratislava Region boasts a favourable geographical location, establishing it as a transportation hub of international significance. The capital Bratislava hosts all the country's government institutions, as well as many universities, theatres, operas, museums and art galleries. The city is picturesquely located on the banks of the river Danube, with the Bratislava Castle, the symbol of the city, perched high atop a hill. The Old Town of Bratislava is renowned for its Gothic and Baroque mansions and churches, and modern Bratislava attracts visitors to its bars, restaurants and such events as the annual jazz festival.
