Banska Bystrica
The region of Banska Bystrica is situated in the southern part of Central Slovakia on the border with Hungary. The region is the largest administrative division in the country in terms of territory, but due to its mountainous terrain it is sparsely populated, with rural character. The largest mountain in the region is the Low Tatras, most of which is protected within the Low Tatras National Park. The mountain range boasts three winter resorts and plenty of hiking and mountain biking trails, as well as rafting and paragliding. Another impressive mountain range includes the Slovak Ore Mountains in the east, and the rivers Hron and Rimava make for ideal picnic and outdoor activities. The administrative centre Banska Bystrica features Gothic churches, traditional houses, medieval castles and monuments, as well as many theatres, museums and entertainment venues.
