Nitra
Home to a significant Hungarian minority, Nitra is the southernmost region in Slovakia, lying on the border with Hungary. The region's landscape is predominantly flat, with frequent hills and heights in the north and east. A vast part of the region's area is occupied by the Danubian Flat, a huge fertile lowland, spreading to neighbouring countries as well. The fresh water in the rivers and lakes, together with the warmest climate in Slovakia, makes the Nitra Region a significant agricultural centre of the country. Many farms and traditional villages here provide authentic local culture. The district is also known for its superb beer brands and aristocratic estates. The capital Nitra is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements on the territory of present-day Slovakia, with an impressive castle and Gothic cathedral, declared a national cultural monument.
