Trnava
The region of Trnava is the least populous and second smallest in Slovakia. Situated in the west of the country, the region almost completely encircles the region of Bratislava and is the only connection between the capital and the rest of the country. Trnava is the only administrative division which borders on three other countries: Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic. The region's landscape is unusually varied, given its moderate size. Its southern part lies within the Danubian Lowland, while in the north the terrain becomes hilly and even mountainous. Recreational and outdoor activities in the region include mountain biking, hiking and picnicking in the woodlands. The oldest city in Slovakia, Trnava, also the administrative centre and largest settlement in the region, is known as "Little Rome" because of the many churches within its city walls. The city has been the venue of many significant political and social events since the Middle Ages.
