Trencin
As one of the eight regions in Slovakia, Trencin lies in the northwestern part of the country, bordering the Czech Republic to the north and west, Trnava, Nitra and Banska Bystrica to the south and Zilina to the east. This small territory has varied landscape, focused around the wide fertile valley of the river Vah and surrounded by a number of mountain ranges from all sides, with exception to the south, where it gradually converges with the Danubian Lowland. The protected White Carpathians, home to endemic types of orchids, are especially attractive. Largely an agricultural district, Trencin features authentic old towns and villages, where local customs and cuisine are still prevalent. Each year in the medieval Bojnice Castle, the International Festival of Ghosts and Spirits is held. Many other castles and mansions in the countryside serve as venues of folk music festivals and film productions.
