Zilina
The Zilina Region is situated in Northern Slovakia on the borders of the Czech Republic and Poland. The northernmost point of the country lies on the territory of Zilina. This region's landscape is one of the most varied in Slovakia, predominantly mountainous, with more than a dozen mountain ranges and isolated heights. The western half of the High Tatras boasts the highest mountain range in Slovakia, known for its diversity of flora and fauna. The oldest national park in the country is situated here, which covers a large part of the mountain range and is the most visited tourist destination after the capital Bratislava. The 13th-century city of Zilina is the administrative, economical and cultural centre of the region. The city is a large heavily industrialised zone but still retains its impressive old quarter, with Baroque squares, stately churches and the Budatin Castle. Zilina is also a modern city with theatres, museums and traditional eateries.
