Goriška
The Goriska region lies in Western Slovenia, and borders Italy, Upper Carniola and Inner Carniola to the east, and the small region of Istria to the south. The region's varied terrain includes a part of the Alps, as well as a wide valley around the confluence of the rivers Soca and Vipava. This fertile area is one of the leading agricultural centres of Slovenia. Its rich history and long periods of Austrian and Italian rule have left its mark on local culture, as evidenced in the numerous aristocratic estates and mansions, amidst impressive parks and gardens. The countryside is also strewn with charming villages and farms. The principal city Nova Gorica, on the Italian frontier, is the cultural and economical centre of this part of the country, and features a medieval Franciscan monastery on a hilltop above the city.
