Upper Carniola
Upper Carniola is a historical region in northwestern Slovenia, which is surrounded by Austria and Slovenian Carinthia to the north, Styria to the east, Inner Carniola and Lower Carniola to the south and Goriska to the west. This region is the most mountainous part of the country, with most of its territory occupied by the easternmost stretches of the Alps, where also the highest peak in Slovenia, Triglav, is located. The appeal of the region as a tourist destination lies in the excellent conditions for winter sports in such mountain resorts as the one in the town of Bled, part of the Bohinj Ski Area, on the shore of the lake with the same name. This resort area is the most frequently photographed motif in the country, with thick woods, glacial lakes, majestic summits, medieval castles and romantic huts. The towns of Jesenice and Kranj are the only larger settlements in Upper Carniola, which feature lush greenery, various museums and peaceful ambience.
