Styria
Styria is the largest region in Slovenia in terms of territory, occupying almost the entire eastern half of the country. The region borders Austria to the north, Croatia to the south, Transmuraland to the east and Carinthia, Upper Carniola and Lower Carniola to the west. The region's varied landscape is mountainous in the west and hilly in the east. Its easternmost part lies in the valley of the river Mura, which is a significant agricultural district. Styria is one of the best developed parts of Slovenia, with such industrial zones as those in the second largest city Maribor, the historical town of Celje and the mining centre Velenje. Styria features plenty of heritage sites, churches, medieval castles and typical old towns, as well as its famed white wine. Ski tourism is also increasingly popular in the Styria region, due to such modern winter resorts as Pohorje in the Alps.
