Inner Carniola
Inner Carniola is a region in southwestern Slovenia, surrounded by Croatia to the south, Istria and Goriska to the west, Upper Carniola to the north and Lower Carniola to the east. Most of the district is occupied by the Kras Plateau, a vast limestone area, inhabited since the Paleolithic Era. The land east of the capital Ljubljana is sparsely populated and has a predominantly rural character. The most famous landmark in Inner Carniola is the Postojna Cave, the longest cave tourist route in the world, and among Slovenia's top tourist attractions. The cave is home to endemic animal species, but also serves as a prime cultural venue for many concerts, due to its superb acoustics. Postojna is the largest town in the region, which features museums and relaxed ambience.
