Lower Carniola
The region of Lower Carniola stretches from the lowland of Ljubljana to the Croatian border, with Inner Carniola to the west, Upper Carniola to the north, while to the east the region is separated by Styria via the river Sava. The region's landscape is hilly, with low mountains, valleys and narrow fields, used mainly for agriculture. Novo Mesto, the main town of Lower Carniola in the valley of the river Krka, is a significant industrial and cultural centre and lies on the highway between Zagreb and Ljubljana. The medieval Old Town of Novo Mesto is considered the most attractive historical ensemble in the area. The whole region is home to numerous palaces and gardens, and many tourists are attracted to the production of wine from the vineyards of the Krka valley.
