Galicia
The autonomous community of Galicia is situated in the Northwestern end of the country, north
of Portugal. Additionally, it borders Asturias and Castile and Leon to the east and boasts two
long stretches of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of Biscay. Compared to most
other Spanish regions, Galicia has, to great extent, retained its rural character with countless
family farms scattered throughout the inner part of the area. Fishing is also an important sector of the local economy along the coast. Galicia is a spot of incredibly rich Celtic heritage, which is
felt above all in many customs, traditions, music and language. The area is also well-known by
gourmets for its fine cuisine and quality wines. The capital, Santiago de Compostela, is a prime
tourist destination for worshippers from the entire Catholic faith, and its old town with imposing
cathedrals and landmarks is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The other two big
cities, Vigo and La Coruna, are centres of heavy industry with busy harbours. There are countless
events and entertainment opportunities and the local football clubs have thousands
of fans far beyond the borders of Galicia and Spain.
