Murcia
Murcia is among the smallest autonomous communities in Spain and is situated in the eastern
part of the country, bordering Andalusia to the west, Castile La Mancha to the north and
Valencia to the east. Furthermore, the region boasts an exceptionally beautiful coastline with
long strips of white sand and tiny hidden coves. This seaside paradise caters even for the most
demanding tourists with its ultra-modern resorts or isolated romantic beaches. Picturesque
sceneries abound throughout the whole region, from massive cliffs along the coast to semi-desert plateaus or gentle hills covered with subtropical vegetation in the inner part. A special attraction for nature lovers is Mar Menor, a salt water lagoon, which is considered the largest natural lake in the
country. The area is one of the oldest spots of civilisation in Europe, with its history stretching as far back as the establishment of Cartagena, one of the first developed ancient cities. Many landmarks and archaeological sites have remained from these times. The contemporary settlement of Cartagena is a modern city and important harbour, but still retaines its unique charm. Murcia is
another big city in the region, known primarily for its cultural events, marvellous cathedral and
three universities.
