Asturias
Asturias is a relatively small autonomous community at the northern end of Spain. It borders
Galicia to the west, Castilla and Leon to the south and Cantabria to the east. The region also enjoys a wide outlet on the Bay of Biscay, which is lined with alternating idyllic beaches and
imposing cliffs. The countryside is formed mainly by the Cantabrian Mountains, an impressive
range that is crossed by endless hiking tracks. Asturias is widely known for its mild climate, very high humidity and lush vegetation. The magnificently located Somiedo Lake and the strangly coloured Dobra River are popular among nature lovers. A row of charming traditional villages with hospitable inhabitants show visitors the less-known face of Spain. The administrative centre Oviedo is a modern industrial city, which has retained its cultural heritage that best seen in the spectacular historical buildings and architectural ensembles on the streets. Gourmets will certainly be enchanted by the rich local cuisine, based on fresh seafood and an incredible variety of cheeses, celebrated far beyond the borders of Asturias.
