Cantabria
Cantabria, ranking among the tiniest autonomous communities in Spain, lies in Northern Spain
on the coast of the Bay of Biscay and borders Asturias, the Basque Country and Castilla and
Leon. Its landscape is largely dominated by the Cantabrian Mountains, a massive range that is almost entirely covered by forests and is crossed by short turbulent rivers that have formed fantastic gorges and waterfalls. Actually, the region belongs to the so-called 'Green Spain' because of its mild and humid climate and diverse flora and fauna. This is the spot in the world with most numerous archaeological sites dating from the Upper Paleolithic period. One of them, the Altamira Cave, is egarded as one of the oldest evidences of pre-historic art. The paintings are estimated to be around 18,000 years-old and are included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Seven natural
parks bear witness to the extraordinary importance of Cantabria and are a favourite destination
for day trips for everyone - not only for keen nature lovers. The capital of the region, Santander, originates from Roman times and is now famous for its busy harbour, its respected university and countless bars, pubs and restaurants.
