Aargau
Aargau is a canton in Northern Switzerland, on the border with Germany. To the west, south and east it is surrounded by Basel-Countryside, Solothurn, Bern, Lucerne, Zug and Zurich. This is one of the lowest situated areas in the mountainous country and its landscape consists mainly of a hilly plateau north of the Alps. The diverse terrain, abundant in woodlands and picturesque river valleys, is perfect for walking tourism for people of all ages and abilities, unlike the higher parts of the Alps. Aargau is regarded as one of the most fertile regions, hence the important role of agriculture and cattle breeding in the local economy. Some noteworthy attractions in the countryside include the hot sulphur springs of Baden, the ruined castle of Habsburg and the Roman remains in Windisch. The principal city, Aarau, originates from 1240, although traces of a Neolithic settlement on that venue speak for a much longer history. It boasts a fascinating old town with valuable architectural landmarks.
