Appenzell Outer Rhodes
Appenzell Outer Rhodes and its smaller neighbour, Appenzell Inner Rhodes, are entirely encircled by the canton of Sankt Gallen in the north-eastern end of Switzerland. Almost the whole territory of the canton is occupied by the northernmost parts of the Alps, but extreme heights are a rarity. The predominantly rural region offers few tourist attractions, but they are of the highest quality. Plenty of co-existing farms and family hotels in the middle of postcard-like scenery create incomparable opportunities for guests to experience the true spirit of Switzerland. The local network of private railways which winds graciously between the Alpine slopes is very popular. The canton is also remarkable for being the only one with two capitals. Herisau, a former commercial centre with more than 1,100 years of history, is the administrative centre, while the village of Trogen plays host to the judicial institutions. Its core boasts a Protestant church and two Zellweger palaces, and has the status of a heritage site of national significance.
