Appenzell Inner Rhodes
Appenzell Inner Rhodes is the least populous canton in Switzerland and the second smallest in terms of territory, after the city of Basel. It lies in the north-eastern part of the country and is surrounded by the cantons of Appenzell Outer Rhodes and Sankt Gallen. Despite its tiny size, the canton offers a great variety of scenery. Most of the area is dominated by impressive mountains with high peaks, including the especially attractive Santis. Deep rivers and crystal-clear lakes such as the Seealpsee, Samtisersee and Falensee contribute further to the charm of the region, widely famed for its rustic idyll and cheese production. The canton's capital, Appenzell, is a small town with traditional alpine architecture that has changed little over the centuries.
