Basel City
Basel City is the smallest in terms of size, but the most densely populated Swiss canton. Situated in the north-western end of the country, it borders Germany and France to the north and represents one of the key transport and economic locations in this part of the continent. The
canton itself comprises the city of Basel, plus two other municipalities that are actually its suburbs. Basel is picturesquely located on both banks of the river Rhine, the busiest thoroughfare in Central and Western Europe. The local economy is based largely on heavy industry and financial services, the city being one of the leading European banking centres. The local university enjoys deserved international popularity, as do the top-quality traditional biscuits produced here. Among the most famous tourist attractions in the canton we should mention, there's Dreiländereck, the point where the territories of Switzerland, Germany and France come together. Of course, most visitors are attracted by the splendid annual carnival, arguably the biggest event of its kind in the Alpine country.
