Bern
The canton of Bern is situated in the heart of Switzerland and is the second largest and most populous administrative unit in the country. Furthermore, as the name suggests, the Swiss capital of Bern is here. The canton is surrounded by Jura, Solothurn, Lucerne, Aargau, Obwalden, Nidwalden, Uri, Valais, Fribourg, Vaud and Neuchatel. Some of the most majestic mountains and peaks are in this canton, including Jungfrau, an area of exceptional natural beauty and a leading winter holiday destination. Generally, the terrain becomes more mountainous from north to south, where plenty of lakes can also be found. The region is particularly renowned for its food production, ranging from wine to cheese. Bern is only the fourth biggest city in Switzerland, but has great political importance. Tourists are drawn to Bern above all by its extraordinary Old Town, where they can admire a host of architectural masterpieces, including the world-famous Zytglogge Clock Tower. The city boasts a wide palette of entertainment opportunities, like theatre and music festivals. It has given birth to a number of prominent artists and scientists.
