Neuchatel
The canton of Neuchatel is located in Western Switzerland, on the border with France. It's one of the two main centres of French culture and language in the country, along with Geneva. Unlike most other parts of Switzerland, Neuchatel's landscape is dominated by low hills with the deep valley of the river Doubs. Large vineyard massifs are a base for wine production, for which the region is famous far beyond the borders of the Alpine country. The main tourist region is Lake Neuchatel with its idyllic coast, which is a favourite place for holidaymakers. The capital, Neuchatel, was founded in the 11th Century and acquired city rights two centuries later. Its old town boasts a fascinating ambience and great architectural value. Furthermore, dozens of museums, often featuring extraordinary exhibits, provide quality entertainment for guests of the city. A wine harvest festival is carried out every year. Another highlight here is the world-famous international watchmaking museum in the charming town of La Chaux-de-Fonds.
