Schaffhausen
The tiny canton of Schaffhausen is the northernmost point of Switzerland. Most of it is surrounded by German territory, while to the south it borders the Swiss cantons of Zurich and Thurgau. This is the lowest part of Switzerland, lying on a high plateau. Almost the whole area is covered with arable land, which determines the prevailingly agricultural character of the local economy. Many river valleys cross the land, the most impressive being the Rhine Valley. Here, on the border with the canton of Zurich and close to the German border, is the largest waterfall in Europe, Rhine Falls, visited by many tourists. Schaffhausen is renowned for being home to top-quality Riesling wine. The capital, Schaffhausen, originates from the early Middle Ages and is known for its spectacular old quarter, abounding in Renaissance buildings with splendid facades.
