Solothurn
Solothurn is a canton in Northern Switzerland, close to the French and German borders. It has a very unusual, indented shape, and is surrounded by the cantons of Bern, Basel-Countryside and Aargau. Solothurn differs from most other Swiss regions in terms of its landscape, since most of its territory is occupied by plains and the foothills of the Jura Mountains. The river Aar and its short tributaries form a dense network, suitable for transport, irrigation and recreational activities. The specific location of the canton makes it a significant crossroads between France, Germany and the rest of Switzerland. Furthermore, "typically Swiss" industries like watch and jewellery production are developed at the highest level here. Tourist attractions are mainly found in the capital, Solothurn, which boasts almost 2,000 years of history. It's regarded as Switzerland's biggest Baroque city and attracts guests with its spectacular architectural ensembles. Among the highlights are its clock tower and imposing 18th-Century cathedral.
