Ticino
Ticino is a canton in Southern Switzerland, stretching deep into Italian territory to the south. It also borders Graubuenden, Valais and Uri. This is one of the most mountainous regions of the country, dominated by the highest parts of the Swiss Alps. Nevertheless, the climate is much milder than in Northern Switzerland. In some valleys in the south, it is Mediterranean with palm trees growing on the shores of lakes and rivers. A host of reputable ski resorts draw tourists from around the world to the majestic Alpine slopes in the winter, while during the rest of the year Lake Lugano and Lago Maggiore are preferred by holidaymakers. Apart from its stunningly beautiful nature, Ticino has much to offer in terms of cultural attractions. The capital, Belinzona, is overlooked by three Medieval castles, which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Further attractive destinations include Locarno and Ascona on Lago Maggiore and Lugano, which are a favourite refuge for wealthy celebrities. The catalogue of events includes plenty of international festivals and events.
