Uri
Uri is known as one of the three cantons that first entered the confederation in 1291. It lies in the central part of Switzerland, surrounded by the cantons of Ticino, Graubuenden, Glarus, Schwyz, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Bern and Valais. Due to its prevailingly mountainous character, Uri is the third least populous administrative unit in Switzerland. Although there are no extreme heights in this part of the Alps, about a fifth of the canton's area is occupied by glaciers. Most of the slopes are covered with virgin woodlands, while the arable land is intensively used for agriculture and cattle-breeding. Deep valleys like those of the river Reuss and its tributaries lend even more appeal to the landscape. Excellent roads and tourist infrastructure makes each point in the canton easily accessible, despite the harsh terrain. The winter resort of Andermatt ranks among the trendiest spots in Uri. The administrative centre of Altdorf is the largest settlement in the region, but is actually a bigger village with a population of only 8,000 inhabitants. Its genuine charm is a magnet for guests interested in history and local customs. Altdorf is one of the emblematic places in Swiss history, since it's known as the venue of the legend of Wilhelm Tell.
