Valais
Valais is situated in the south of Switzerland and borders France and Italy to the south, as well as Vaud and Bern to the north and Uri and Ticino to the east. The third largest Swiss canton is one of the most mountainous, being entirely occupied by the Alps with some of their highest peaks. The major attraction is the Matterhorn, considered the most majestic and inaccessible peak in the Alps. It's conquered by numerous alpinists every year. Another natural highlight of the region is Lake Geneva, an exceptionally beautiful area, loved by tourists from around the globe. Tourism is the most profitable sector of the local economy, especially in the winter, when superb resorts and thousands of kilometres of ski runs are constantly being enjoyed. The wide Rhone Valley is the most significant economic area, as most of the bigger towns are concentrated within it. The capital of the canton, Sion, is a modern economic and cultural centre, but at the same time can offer historical sites of great value, like the excellently preserved Old Town and the Medieval Basilique de Valere, proudly perched on a height above the city.
