Vaud
Vaud is the third-most populous and fourth-largest among the 26 cantons of Switzerland. Lying in the south-western end of the country, it's one of the centres of French culture and language, together with neighbouring Geneva and Neuchatel. Vaud's landscape is varied, consisting of both high, rugged mountains and coastal plains near the two big lakes, Geneva to the south and Neuchatel to the north. Between them, gentle hilly areas can be found. Tourism in the area relies mainly on the exclusive ski resorts in the Alps, the most famous being Les Diablerets and Leysin. On the other hand, millions of visitors are attracted to the coast of Lake Geneva in the summer. The administrative centre, Lausanne, is one of the most picturesquely situated cities in the country, with its location on Lake Geneva's coast in the foothills of the imposing Jura Mountains. It's an economic and cultural centre of the highest importance. The cathedral, plus dozens of museums, music and art festivals and reputable educational institutions create the image of the city. Also, the seat of the International Olympic Committee is here.
