Aegean
The Aegean Region is situated entirely in the Asian part of Turkey, occupying the south-western corner of the country. It borders the Marmara Region to the north, and the Central Anatolia and Mediterranean Region to the west. The area features a long, indented coastline on the Aegean Sea, hence its name. The landscapes are varied and outstandingly beautiful, a fantastic mixture of majestic rugged mountains, coastal plains with lush greenery and quiet, picturesque gulfs and inlets. One world-famous landmark here is Pamukkale, whose white slopes and mineral waters are frequently enjoyed by tourists and maybe the best-known postcard motif from Turkey. The crystal-clear waters and hidden harbours draw yachtsmen from all around, while dozens of high-quality seaside resorts like Bodrum, Marmaris, Oludeniz and Kusadasi are deservedly ranked as the most beautiful holiday spots in the country. The inland is occupied by endless olive groves and vineyards, with agriculture being the second most significant economic sector in the Aegean Region, next to tourism. Those who are fond of history and archaeology will be astonished by the number and importance of heritage sites, ruins and monuments from ancient times.
