Central Anatolia
Central Anatolia is the largest of the seven Turkish regions in terms of territory. It's located in the western part of Asia Minor, surrounded by the Black Sea Region to the north, Eastern Anatolia to the east, the Mediterranean Region to the south and the Marmara and Aegean Regions to the west. This is the geographical and economic heart of the country, excluding Istanbul. Plenty of landscapes are to be found in this area, most of which is occupied by a spacious high plateau, encircled by high mountains on all sides. It's extremely dry, with only a few creeks and lakes whose area and depth vary greatly in response to precipitation. Salty Lake Tuz is particularly attractive for visitors. Arguably the most famous landmark in the region, and also recognised as one of the most miraculous spots worldwide, is Cappadocia with its fairy chimneys. This indescribable UNESCO World Heritage Site is the favourite tourist destination in Turkey and brings millions of visitors each year. Central Anatolia is the home of the capital, Ankara. This huge metropolis hosts most major governmental institutions and copious tourist attractions, such as its prehistoric sites and symbolic Atakule Tower. Konya is another must for those who are curious about authentic Islamic and Turkish customs.
