South West England
Occupying a long and narrow peninsula in the southernmost part of the island, the South West
England region is actually the largest administrative unit in the country. At the same time, it is
one of the least populated areas, due to its prevailingly rural character. The countryside is full of
small charming towns and villages, some of which offer tourist attractions of the highest rank, such
are the cathedrals in Exeter, Gloucester and Salisbury and the festivals in Brockworth and
Salisbury, to name but a few. The only bigger cities in the region are the cosmopolitan Bristol and Bath with its world-famous thermal baths and Roman remains. Maybe the best known English landmark, Stonehenge, is the centre of tourism in the South West. The contrast with the natural landscape is another reason for the district's popularity. Hundreds of mile-long coasts with rugged cliffs and secluded gulfs, weird-looking sandstone promontories, idyllic fields and woodlands will surely enchant everyone.
