Down
County Down occupies the easternmost part of Northern Ireland. It borders the counties of Antrim to the north and Armagh to the west. The area features a long and picturesque coastline, including the peninsulas of Ards and Lecale and a few loughs, some of which are connected to the sea. The beauty of Down's landscape is complemented by the low but impressive Mourne Mountains, widely regarded as a leading destination for hiking and walking tourism within the United Kingdom. The secondmost populous county is inhabited predominantly by Protestants, unlike the rest of the country. The most famous attractions include its Protestant cathedrals and above all, St. Patrick's Church in Newry, the first-ever Protestant temple in Northern Ireland. Other places worth seeing include the Scrabo Tower and some of the oldest inns in the world. Down includes part of the capital, Belfast, with its bustling nightlife and cultural programmes, but the biggest town in the county is the seaside resort of Bangor.
