East Renfrewshire
Lying amidst the low mountains in the heart of Scotland, East Renfrewshire counts to the smallest council areas in the country. Plenty of historical sites of different epochs draw tourists' attention. The pre-historic settlement in Overlee is considered one of the oldest evidences of human activity on the island. Some partially ruined Medieval castles like Pollok Castle, Mearns Castle and Caldwell Tower are also interesting landmarks. A wide range of outdoor activities can be practiced in the copious open-air pitches, parks and playgrounds. Specially prepared walking trails connect heritage sites with each other. Shopping, nightlife or theatre are almost impossible to find, as the largest settlement in the area Giffnock has only 9,000 inhabitants.
