Edinburgh
The capital of Scotland, Edinburgh, is the second largest city in the country and one of its council areas. The city is spectacularly situated on the south shore of the estuary of the river Forth. Together with Glasgow, Edinburgh is a political, cultural and economical cantre of highest rank. The international festival, held every August in the centre of the city, is among the most impressive cultural events worldwide. With its outstanding mixture of Medieval and Georgian architecture the city is often regarded as one of the most attractive cities in Europe. Not surprisingly, the Old Town and New Town districts are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Edinburgh is the seat of the Parliament and all government institutions. Especially reputable is the University of Edinburgh, which was the reason why the city used to be nicknamed the Athens of the North. The Scottish capital also has its modern face, represented by bustling cultural programme and nightlife.
