Midlothian
Midlothian is one of the smallest council areas in Scotland. It lies on the south coast of Firth of
Forth, directly bordering the capital Edinburgh. The landscape of the area is dominated by the
Pentland Hills and the spectacular panoramic view towards the capital. A number of captivating
parks and green areas are a wonderful setting for strolls, picnics, hiking and many other outdoor
activities. Midlothian is a region of great historical and cultural significance with enigmatic castles,
aristocratic mansions and religious sites with turbulent past. The leading visitor attractions are the
Rosslyn Chapel, the Scottish Mining Museum and Arniston House. Due to the plenty of industrial
sites of huge cultural value, the region is a central point in the European Route of Industrial
Heritage. The government of the council area is based in Dalkeith, one of the few bigger towns in
Midlothian.
