East Lothian
The council area of East Lothian lies in the south of Scotland's east coast. Typical of the area are
the gentle rolling hills, which have created perfect conditions for building golf courses. With 19
world-class courses East Lothian attracts golfers from the United Kingdom and abroad. Another
attraction for sporty people and nature lovers is the magnificent coastline with a few excellent
beaches like Seacliff Beach with its mansion and the protected natural area Yellowcraigs, which
are suitable for all types of watersports. As everywhere in Scotland, mysterious castles with long
history are to be found here – Dirleton Castle and Hailes Castle being the most visited. East Lothian
is largely a rural area in the outskirts of the capital Edinburgh and as such doesn't provide much of
city entertainment. The only two bigger towns are Scotland's oldest town Musselburgh, established
around 80 AD, and the administrative centre of the area – Haddington.
