Fife
Fife is a council area on the east coast of Scotland with long history and promising future. The area was inhabited in pre-Roman times by the Picts, a tribal union which had one of its kingdoms here. Hence, the large number of important artifacts and monuments found in and around Fife. Today Fife ranks third in terms of population among all 32 council areas, only after the two big metropoles Glasgow and Edinburgh. The economic and cultural centre of the region is Dunfermline with its historical buildings, such as the Dunfermline Abbey, numerous museums and tranquil green parks and gardens. Another important tourist destination is the small town of St Andrews on the coast. It is famous throughout the country as one of the oldest university towns in Europe. Furthermore, its surroundings are best known for the incomparable golf courses that make it one of the most prestigious golf centres worldwide.
