Western Isles
The Western Isles council area comprises the archipelago of Outer Hebrides, separated from the
northwestern end of mainland Scotland through the straits Minch and Little Minch. Although it
consists of 15 inhabited islands, almost the whole population is concentrated on Lewis and Harris,
which is in fact one island. The only larger settlement is Stornoway, which has a harbour, an airport and even a university campus. The Neo-Gothic Lews Castle and the imposing facade of the town hall are among the few attractions. The most visited event is the Hebridean Celtic Festival, which draws
crowds of guests and participants every July. Due to the severe natural conditions, the possibilities
for outdoor activities and recreation on the Outer Hebrides are considerably limited.
