Dumfries and Galloway
Dumfries and Galloway is the southernmost council area, next to the border with England. It also
has a narrow outlet on the Irish Sea to the west. The region enjoys mild, but varied relief, with not
very high hills and parts of the lowlands along the coast. Numerous hiking trails cross this part of
the island, particularly famous for its intact nature. History freaks and romantics will be spoilt for
choice by the quantity of castles around, such as the Caerlaverock Castle and the Cardoness
Castle for instance. There are no big towns in this prevailingly rural district. The most important one
is Stranraer on the west coast, along with the historic Dumfries, known as Queen of the South
and the ill-famed Lockerbie. The rest of the towns and villages provide a tranquil setting for holidays
in rustic atmosphere rather than any cultural attractions.
