Ceredigion
The western county of Ceredigion is the fourth biggest county in Wales, but also one of the least
populous areas. It is famous as one of the last bastions of traditional Welsh culture and language.
The long coast of the Cardigan Bay to the west abounds in excellent beaches that have won many
international awards. In the east, tourists can admire the exceptional beauty of the Cambrian
Mountains, crossed by a network of turbulent rivers and creeks. Despite the bombastic name, the
mountains are actually easily accessible rolling hills. The only larger settlement is the capital of
the region, Aberystwyth. Ceredigion is an educational and scientific centre of national importance.
Two universities and the National Library of Wales are located here. A few heritage sites, like the
Aberystwyth Castle and the proverbial Aberystwyth Electric Cliff Railway, are definitely worth a
visit.
