Newport
Newport is the third biggest city in Wales, after Cardiff and Swansea, and has the status of a
separate county. It is located in the southern end of Wales, on the shore of the Bristol Channel.
These areas were inhabited back in pre-Roman times, which makes Newport an important heritage
site. Some of the best known historical landmarks are the Newport Castle and the St Woolos
Cathedral. Much more recent, but no less imposing, are the bridges over the river Usk, namely the
City Bridge and the unique facility called Transporter Bridge. Newport is acquiring a new image
following the massive regeneration programme, launched by the autorities in the last decades.
The city is also celebrated as the cultural capital of the country, due to its superb selection of
theatres, museums and other events.
