Powys
Powys is the largest, but most sparsely populated county in Wales. It occupies large parts of the
Welsh east, bordering on England. Apart from this, Powys borders 12 of the other administrative
regions in the country. The predominantly mountainous landscape is the main reason for the
rural character of the area, which is strewn with villages, farms and a couple of small towns. The
biggest among them is Newtown with population of only 12,000 inhabitants. Llandrindod Wells is
home of the administrative headquarters of Powys and is maybe the only place to offer some
cultural entertainment, such as the famous Llandrindod Wells Victorian Festival in August. The
town has been a recognised spa centre since the 18th Century. The region is a paradise for nature
lovers with its wild landscape and intact forests, which provide countless opportunities for outdoor
activities and healthy recreation.
