Der Graben
Der Graben must be included in your sightseeing tour, since it’s one of the most popular streets in Vienna’s first district, situated in the city centre. It connects Stock-im-Eisen Platz, located next to the Palais Equitable with the junction of Kohlmarkt and Tuchlauben. You can discover other famous streets in the same area, such as Tiefer Graben and Wipplinger Strasse, the latter set under the Hohe Brücke Bridge. Der Graben’s origin dates back to the old Roman times and the encampment of Vindobona’s settlement, which was situated along the present-day street. Later, the trench was filled and levelled to become one of the first residential streets in the new city district. At first, Der Graben was used as a marketplace and gained various additional names for the type of products sold there, such as Grüner Markt, Kräutermarkt and Brotbänke.
Interesting sites are to be found in the vicinity, for example the Grabenhof (Thienemannhof). Since it was built, this huge building has been used as a venue for various cultural events and today is the property of the
Österreichische Beamtenversicherung. Passing near the building, one can see a memorial plaque for Josef Sonnleithner, the founder of the Society of the Friends of Music in Vienna.
Freisingerhof and Trattnerhof are other characteristic sites in the area that are worth visitors’ attention. The Freisingerhof boasts the first monumental building on Der Graben, used as an administrative centre, as well as a lodging place for the Freising bishops. Built in the Romanesque style, the building is huge and imposing, with comparatively small vaults and rooms. The Trattnerhof is also impressive with its nicely decorated entrance portals, engraved with caryatids by artist Tobias Kögler. In 1911, it was substituted by two administrative buildings, separated by an alley that leads to the old city of Vienna.
Amongst the other typical buildings on the street stands the Ankerhaus, a residential building designed by Otto Wagner. Its architecture combines various styles and techniques, including glass surfaces and concrete constructions. Connoisseurs of the Baroque style will be delighted to visit the Palais Bartolotti-Partenfeld, attractive both for its design and history. The street has two beautiful fountains that add reviving flair to the area. One of them was known as The Lion Fountain, which was decorated artistically with four lion’s heads and was mainly used to put out fires; the other fountain is also quite impressive.
Der Graben Street is also a festival site where people come to celebrate various holidays, such as the Advent. In the past, the street served as a place for triumphal processions in honour of Emperors and Archdukes. For sure, everyone will enjoy a stroll down this street and a visit to its cultural sites.
