Maria-Theresien-Platz
Maria-Theresien-Platz is a large square and popular tourist site in Vienna. It’s located in the city centre, adjacent to the large Ringstrasse and Museum of Modern Arts (taking up part of the area with the former Imperial Stables). Built in 1819, the square and its venues attract both local residents and foreign tourists who come to the beautiful park here. The square boasts impressive cultural sights, including two museums – the Natural History Museum and the Art History Museum. There’s also a large statue of the great Empress Marie-Theresa of Austro-Hungaria.
The two museums are tourist must-sees, impressive with their facades, brilliant architecture and spectacular art collections. What’s more, the Museum Quarter exhibits contemporary work, whereas the older museums are the place to spend more time and have a nice cultural and historical lesson about the arts.

The Natural History Museum has attractive statues on its facade, representing personifications of the continents of Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. Everyone can find something to delight them. There are collections of butterflies and other insects, as well as well-preserved animals, including a baby Javanese rhinoceros, a Przewalski horse, a dodo and more. Climbing up the stairwell, you can see nice paintings of Empress Maria-Theresa and her dog, as well as the honourable Emperor Franz Joseph. Another notable spot inside the museum is the Mikrotheater, where you can see slides of microscopic organisms, a gift from the Japanese Emperor to Emperor Franz Joseph of Austro-Hungaria, as well as the first depiction of an underwater scene and the diving well from where it was made.

The Art History Museum’s facade depicts famous European artists, among others the famous Dutch painter Pieter Bruegel. It offers a splendid collection of famous works of the Northern European masters. Among the most impressive ones are Bruegel's 'Tower of Babel', as well as a magnificent collection of ancient art. Connoisseurs of Egyptian art will be charmed by the stone carvings, well-preserved mummies and tomb of an Egyptian prince that was specially transported to Vienna and reassembled for Emperor Franz Joseph. On the roof above the stairwell you'll see beautiful frescoes, painted by the renowned Gustav Klimt.

Maria Theresien Square becomes even more attractive with its Christmas Village. During the holiday season, the magnificent park is beautifully decorated and invites you to a real Viennese Christmas.
