Herderpark
Stretching over an area of almost 43,000 square metres, Herderpark is situated in the 11th Viennese district called Simmering. The namesake of the park is the great philosopher and poet Johan Gottfried Herder and the idea to call the park after him came from the bordering square Herderplatz that caries his name since 1911. The park used to be a yard of a public school (Volksschule) located at Herderplatz. At first, during World War I and until the 1920s the area of the future Herderpark consisted of small gardens. Those were gathered by the initiative of garden architect Fritz Kratochwjle to form a public green space that was established as a park in 1930 to make living conditions in the quarter better.
Apart from peaceful and relaxing atmosphere Herderpark provided a great swimming pool for children. After World War II, Herderpark was expanded as a promenade along the former Wiener Neustaedter Kanal (Viennese New City canal) and some playgrounds were added. Further renovations took place in 2006, supplying the park also with many sports amenities such as a basketball playground and table tennis tables. Moreover, Herderpark boasts a marvellous fountain at the centre of Herderpark- Meerjungfrau (Sea Maiden). Nowadays, one of the essential features of the park are the fruit trees, the rose and lilac bushes that give out amazing scents in the spring. Make sure you are there at that time to be even more charmed by this fabulous local city park.
