Austrian National Library
The Austrian National Library is an architectural masterpiece of the Viennese baroque. Its architects were Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and his son Emanuel. It is the largest baroque library in Europe. The library was founded in the first half of the 18th century as an independent wing of the
Imperial Palace.
The magnificent and majestic State Hall of the library is 77.7 meters long and 20 meters high. It is crowned by a cupola decorated with frescoes by Daniel Gran. The cupola is oval in form and reaches an imposing total height of 29.2 metres. In the middle of the dome stands a life-sized statue of Austrian Emperor Karl VI. More than 200,000 volumes are exhibited in the State Hall, among them are the comprehensive library of Prince Eugene of Savoy and one of the largest collections of Martin Luther’s writings from the Reformation Era. As well among the exhibits are two refined Venetian baroque globes: the first for the earth and the second for the sky, each of them with a diameter of more than one meter.
The Music Collection in the Austrian National Library is housed in the Albertina. Visitors will find precious manuscripts and original scores, such as
Mozart's Requiem,
Franz Schubert's autograph,
Haydn's National Anthem,
Beethoven's Violin Concerto, some of the papers left by Anton Bruckner as well as the score of Richard Strauss's "Rosenkavalier".
The services at the Austrian National Library include: Online ordering of books for the reading room via e-mail; Supplying information: carrying out of research (sometimes at a fee); Preparing reproductions (photocopies, microfilms, photos); Workshops for library users; Guided tours through the library.
