Coudenberg Archaeological Site
The collection of the Coudenberg Archaeological Site showcases archaeological treasures of Brussels. Since the 12th Century, the top of the
Coudenberg mound, the site of the present-day
Place Royal and its surrounding area, served as a significant centre of power. In the late 14th and early 15th Century, the castle of the dukes of Brabant was converted into a palace, expanded and embellished by the dukes of Burgundy, the emperor Charles V, and archdukes Albert and Isabelle.
In 1731, the edifice suffered severe damage and its remnants disappeared on a site, which contained a square after 1775. Today, under the cobblestones and neighbouring buildings, this archaeological heritage is revealed through the maze of subterranean passages. One of the features here is the Aula Magna, where Charles V forsook the Burgundian Netherlands in 1555.
