English Theatre Brussels
Even before Brussels began to be considered the capital of Europe, it had the ambience of a cosmopolitan city. It cherished the traditions of Europe and appreciated the national contribution of all members of the future EU family. This attitude is best expressed in art. Proud of its theatrical traditions – both of the Flemish and French communities, Brussels encourages new establishments, the most popular of which is the English Comedy Club, or ECC, founded in the beginning of the 20th Century.
Expatriates from the United Kingdom founded the ECC in 1909. Its main objective was to present English-language theatre, to promote the values of the English community and to keep it together. It was not just a place where artists were given the possibility to create in their own language. It was also a venue where all the expatriates who missed their homeland could find some comfort. Soon the ECC launched its partnership with the American Theatre Company and the Irish Theatre Group. The three groups together own a complex of several buildings. Among other partners of the club there is the Brussels Shakespeare Society and the Brussels Light Opera Company.

Most of the ECC productions today are full-length performances. The programme is changed each year and at least 6 to 8 new productions are added to the repertoire. They are always prepared by a team, which is unanimously selected by the Club. The Club also organizes play readings. This is a way to present the new plays to artists – both members and non-members. The play readings remain a great way to keep the English community together, as they attract not only artists but also the public. The ECC hosts various artistic festivals, mainly in the field of theatre but also other performing arts. Moreover, workshops and discussions dedicated to various artistic community-related issues are held at this site.

Present-day ECC has many more objectives and more influence than it used to at the beginning of the 20th Century. Today, in the times of globalisation and cosmopolitan spirit, the ECC is a perfect way to promote art since it operates in the language which is most easily accessible not only to the Europeans but also to people from various countries worldwide. At the EEC the importance of culture and communication between the people overcomes the language barrier and it directed at an international audience, at the same time strengthening the national identity of all English-speaking nations.
