Place du Palais
Place du Palais is situated near the entry to the
Old Town in Nice, between
Cours Saleya and
Place Massena. The square is most famous for the
Palais de Justice (Law Court of Nice). On the same place one can also visit
Palais Rusca, which was part of the military barracks and now belongs to the justice department. Except the impressive buildings, there is also a city clock that adds to the notable appearance of the square.
This area attracts both tourists and local residents who come to see the palaces and take photos. The
Palais de Justice is designed in Neo-Classical style and dates back to the last century. It is connected to
Palais Rusca by a pretty fountain that reflects the beautiful Mediterranean light and provides cheerful atmosphere. By night it is attended mostly by young people who love to sit on the steps in front of
Palais de Justice and hang out sipping on a beer. Despite the limited space, various performances, concerts and other events are held there and turn the area into a vibrant stage.
The Nice City authorities worked on a restoration plan of the square and made some modifications to renovate it. As a result, you can see the square in all its glory today. There is an imposing staircase, which leads to the recently refurbished law courts and from the top you can have a look at the whole square. On the right side of the square you will see the small bell tower with a series of archways behind it. Take a break and relax on the terrace of a cosy cafe, indulging the truly Mediterranean atmosphere.
Place du Palais de Justice was a somewhat abandoned area in the past. Later, the situation changed and small
markets were established in the area; they are selling books, records and art objects. Almost each day, you can find interesting things to buy on the stalls. The Second-hand and Ancient Book Market are taking place on the first and third Saturday of the month. Book sellers and buyers particularly like the place. It is a little bit crowded at this period but it is possible to find an interesting book at a good price. On the Arts and Crafts Market there is a selection of paintings, sculptures and souvenirs – a true paradise for collectors. Each fourth Saturday of the month there is an Antique Postcard Market where philatelists and other collectors can stay for hours. On the Fish Market you can get the best and seafood in the region.
