Cimiez
Cimiez is another interesting site in Nice, situated north of the centre. Originally it was the Roman capital of the Alpes-Maritime region. This magical place displays some Roman heritage such as an amphitheatre and Roman bathhouses. If you are interested in archaeology, go to the Musée d'Archéologie, where you can trace the history from the Bronze Age until the beginning of the Middle Ages, enjoying the archaeological finds.
The Cimiez Convent is another place of interest that should not be missed. Important pieces of art exposed in its chapel are a deed of the Bréa brothers, great painters who lived in the late 15th Century. The main altarpiece is worth your attention for its carved and gilded components. The convent hosts the Musée Franciscain with splendid 17th-Century frescoes and the collection of 350 documents and art objects. Beautiful gardens are a great spot for taking a walk offering wonderful views of Nice and Baie des Anges. There are peaceful alleys and olive groves, in afternoons and on weekends crowded with tourists, cyclists and rollerbladers. Musée Matisse is also situated in the park, offering unique collection of paintings and personal works belonging to the prominent artist. In Cimiez there is also a cemetery, where the masters of art, Matisse and Dufy were buried. You can visit also the Musée Message Biblique Marc Chagall, designed by the architect André Hermant. It offers over 600 works on Biblical themes, mosaics and sculptures, stained glasses, etc. It is a peaceful and modern place surrounded by a nice garden with olive-trees, holm oaks and cypresses.
