A joint initiative of the Ministry of Culture of France and the local institutions of the city of Nice resulted in the creation of a Drama Centre of Nice Cote d’Azur. Jacques Weber was the person in charge, responsible for the project then. The mission was contemporary art. The centre aimed to promote and ensure popularity to new artistic initiatives coming mainly from Nice and the region, but also from other parts of France and Europe. Later on, in 1989, the
Theatre National de Nice was established. Commonly known as TNN, the theatre quickly grew in fame, adherents and the quality of productions.
Theatre National de Nice was built right next to the
Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Set in an imposing building of white marble in the shape of octagon, it has two big halls – one in the Italian style with 900 places and an amphitheatre with 300 places. There is also a repetition hall with modern equipment. Thus the biggest theatre in the city of Nice is able to ensure space and excellent conditions for literally all kinds of plays. And indeed the rich programme and exclusive performances are what the
Theatre National de Nice is famous for.
